Questions

What does "average residential price" mean?
Total residential revenue divided by total residential kilowatt-hours sold, as reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It includes the energy charge, delivery, riders, fuel or power-cost adjustments and the fixed customer charge (spread across all kWh sold), but not the consumption taxes that utilities collect and pass through. It is the right single number for comparing utilities and for solar math.
What is the average electric bill in Virginia?
About $173 a month per residential customer over the 12 months to July 2026, for about 1,051 kWh: statewide residential revenue divided by customer-months, from EIA-861M. By utility it ranges from $112 (HEC) to $200 (CVEC) using each utility's own average usage and 2025 price.
Why is the latest month marked preliminary?
EIA publishes monthly data about two months after the fact from a sample of utilities and revises it when the full annual census comes in. Revisions are usually small.
Why does my co-op's rate here differ from my bill?
The utility figures are calendar-year averages from EIA's annual Form 861. Cooperatives adjust their power-cost rider several times a year, so the current tariff can sit above or below last year's average. For your own numbers, divide a recent bill by its kWh. The 2025 figures come from EIA's early release where noted and will be revised when the final file lands.
How often does this page update?
Automatically. A script checks EIA weekly and rebuilds the site when a new month or a new annual file appears. Last checked: October 6, 2026.
